The core idea in one paragraph

Your brain produces electrical rhythms — delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma — each associated with a different mental state. Sleep runs on delta and theta. Calm sits in alpha. Focus lives in beta and gamma. When your brain is stuck in the wrong rhythm at the wrong time (beta at 2 a.m., theta at 10 a.m.), the state you want feels out of reach. Neural frequency programmes work by presenting your brain with a pattern it wants to synchronise to — a technique the research literature calls brainwave entrainment. Over minutes, your brain follows the pattern. Over weeks, it gets better at producing that rhythm on its own.

Two effect layers you need to understand before you start

Every peer-reviewed study on neural frequency training measures two separate effects at two separate timescales. Confusing them is the single most common reason people say "it didn't work."

Layer 1: The acute effect

Measurable brainwave changes within minutes of a session starting. Feeling calmer during the audio, falling asleep faster while it plays, feeling more locked-in immediately after. This is the brain warming up — it's real but transient.

Layer 2: The trait effect

Cumulative changes that show up after 2–4 weeks of consistent use. A calmer baseline. Easier-to-reach focus. Better sleep even on nights you don't listen. This is what you actually want — and this is what needs the training curve.

Week 1
Introduction — the acute effects arrive

You'll feel during-session effects. Calmer while the audio plays. Falling asleep faster on nights you use it. More focused immediately after a focus session. What you probably won't feel yet is any change to your default state when you're not listening. That's normal. Don't quit here — this is where most people who dismiss binaural beats give up.

Week 2
Sleep starts compounding

If you're on the Sleep protocol, this is typically when the compound effects begin showing up — waking less during the night, sleeping longer, waking more restored. A 2022 pilot study of delta binaural beats found statistically significant improvements between week 1 and week 2 across all three sleep metrics (p < 0.001). Focus and calm protocols are still mostly in acute-effect territory here; keep going.

Week 3
Focus and calm become measurable

This is where Focus and Calm protocols start producing changes you can measure — not just feel. Sustained attention feels slightly easier and lasts longer. The five things that make the difference

Wear headphones

Binaural beats require two slightly different tones reaching each ear separately. Speakers, soundbars, and bone-conduction headphones don't work — the two tones mix, and no beat frequency is generated.

Show up daily

Consistency beats duration. Fifteen minutes daily beats a 90-minute session once a week. The training curve is driven by repetition, not total exposure.

Match frequency to goal

Delta and theta for sleep. Alpha for calm. Beta and gamma for focus. Using a calm protocol to try to focus will feel like the app "doesn't work" — because it's not designed for that.

Reduce noise around you

Trying to entrain in a loud, over-stimulating environment is like trying to strength-train while asleep. The stimulus is there, but the neural conditions for adaptation aren't.

Give it four weeks

Not four days. Not one week. Four. Every credible peer-reviewed protocol runs for at least a month, because that's what the underlying neuroscience demands.

Measure your baseline

Write down two or three baseline numbers on day one — sleep latency, focus block length, anxiety score. Check them at day 30. Numbers don't lie; feelings across weeks are hard to remember.

Why programmes are 4 weeks — not longer, not shorter

Tihna's programmes are structured as 4-week protocols because that's the sweet spot the peer-reviewed evidence points to. Shorter than that, and trait-level changes haven't had time to accumulate. Longer than that, and the marginal gains from each additional week start diminishing.

The Focus protocol, for example, uses a 15 Hz beta primer in weeks 1–2 to build attentional stability, before shifting to pure 40 Hz gamma in weeks 3–4 for the cognitive-consolidation phase — matching the training pattern that produced statistically significant memory improvements in Sharpe et al. (2020). The Sleep protocol progresses from theta primer to deep delta over the same arc, matching how sleep-onset training compounds in the delta-binaural literature.

What Tihna will not do

Being honest about what neural frequency programmes don't do matters as much as being clear about what they do:
